Wikimedia Armenia is a scientific educational NGO based in Armenia with a vision to support education in Armenia by creating and disseminating free knowledge and provide equal opportunities of accessibility. The main goal of the organization is to promote acquisition and dissemination of free knowledge through Wikimedia projects, to support investing and spreading of Wiki technologies. Since 2014, in the frame of the Education Program, Wikimedia Armenia has established WikiClubs in around 15 rural and urban communities of Armenia.
With the support of AGBU «Bridge for CSOs» program, funded by EU, Wikimedia Armenia has established 5 WikiClubs in 5 communities of Armenia; Alaverdi, Goris, Koghb, Spitak, and Vardenik. The WikiClub is a non-formal educational center with a coordinator selected from the active Wikieditors of the community. The coordinator mentors the club members’ editing activities on Wikipedia, Wikisource or Wiktionary, teaches them new Wikimedia tools, organizes various cultural and social activities aimed at building various skills for WikiClub members. The club members are usually school students and youngsters. However, the organization is also trying to involve adults in education through WikiClubs. They create pages on Wikipedia which help them to self-educate and give others the opportunity to learn.
Editing process teaches children to volunteer, clubbers become more responsible, because they realize that another person will learn through their articles.
Through editing the Club members develop their knowledge of native and foreign languages, because usually they create articles translating from other Wikipedias.
Throughout the nine months of this project, about 120 members from five WikiClubs have created 8627 articles and entries on the Armenian Wikipedia and Armenian Wiktionary. Through their articles and entries they contributed to the development and enrichment of Armenian content on the Internet.
